Spring Cleaning

Picture
Spring is just around the corner! The days are getting longer, the crocuses are blooming, and the sun is shining more, and the days are getting slowly warmer. It’s almost time to open all the windows, shake out the rugs, and clean behind the furniture. Yes, spring cleaning!

I find spring cleaning to be a wonderful tradition to clear the air for a new start and shake off the dull, dusty mantle of winter. There is something immensely satisfying in knowing that all of the nooks and crannies of your home have been attended to. Not to mention the health benefits – dust, mold, and germs from the winter can exacerbate allergies and make one more prone to sickness during the spring and summer. Paying attention to detail in spring cleaning is a great way to keep you and your family healthy and reduce indoor pollution.

I like to wash or air out all of fabrics in my house such as curtains and tapestries, plus my winter comforters. If you have a big porch it might be nice to even put your mattress out in the sun, as sunshine is anti-bacterial. Leaving the windows open is a fine way to air out your mattress as well. I make sure to move all of the furniture and dust behind it, then wipe down all of the baseboards and dusty corners using my favorite aromatic all-purpose herbal cleanser, featured below.

Aromatic Herbal Cleanser

    Ingredients:

Herbs (fresh or dry) -
         Lavender
         Sage
         Rosemary
         Thyme
         Mint

1 gallon white vinegar

                                Directions
    - Add 1 -2 cups of these herbs combined to the gallon of vinegar (you will have
to remove some vinegar from the jug to make space).

    - Shake it up to make sure all of the herbs are saturated.

    - Steep for 6 weeks. It is OK if you need to pour some off for cleaning after a         week but let the rest continue steeping.

    - Pour 1 part herbal vinegar and 3 parts water in a spray bottle and voila! You         have an effective aromatic and eco-friendly cleansing solution.

Not only will your home smell great, but these herbs are strongly anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. And doesn’t it feel nice to know that you could drink this product?

Shaking all that dust up while cleaning may cause an acute allergic reaction. I take nettles tincture before, during, and after cleaning. A shower also helps to assuage any cleaning-induced sneeze attacks. Stepping outside to enjoy the fresh air is always a wonderful option to escape the dust bunnies while you round them up.

                                            Happy Spring!!!
